Investment action plan for wastewater treatment in peri-urban areas of Phnom Penh, Cambodia

BORDA Cambodia is engaged in a project to develop an investment action plan for wastewater treatment in peri-urban areas of Phnom Penh. Stemming from the Global Green Growth Institute’s Cambodia Green Urban Development programme, the overarching objective of the project is to improve liveability in the target communities and thus strengthen the city’s resilience as a whole. The project aims to do this by facilitating a transition to improved wastewater management using an integrated decentralised approach.

As a priority project within the Green City Strategic Plan for Phnom Penh, the BORDA investment action plan will contribute to informed decision making by:

  • Demonstrating/showcasing decentralised wastewater treatment solutions in peri-urban areas of Phnom Penh
  • Helping to reach the Green City Strategic Plan objective: ‘all households in peri-urban areas are using improved and secure sanitation systems that will prevent pollution dispersion during high rain and flooding events’
  • Improving wastewater management and pollution prevention measures that help to restore natural hydrological systems with the intent of multiple uses (stormwater retention area, wastewater polishing, recreation, and biodiversity enhancement)
  • Establishing real-case sector learning projects
  • Showcasing decentralised (district-level) operation and management (O&M) schemes for sanitation infrastructure and service provision
